Roof Area

This is the roof area. The ramp that leads down into the entrance space and penetrates the processing area is to the left. The reflecting pool, which can also be seen in the crushing pad rendering, allows light to enter the processing space below. There is also a bocce ball court behind the reflecting pool that is the same size as the pool.

Crushing Pad

This is the crushing pad on the upper level. The crushing pad is covered in a metal mesh. The walls can drop down into the space below creating a handling room below the grape crushing. When it is not being used as a crushing space it can be a secondary tasting space or another gathering space. The crushing space is one of the main elements that is seen from Highway 101. The reflecting pool allows for light to diffuse into the processing area below.

Guest rooms

The guest rooms are two fairly simple shapes. They each have three concrete walls that are covered in a wire mesh. The fourth wall is opaque glass with wire mesh and slides to open the space to the surrounding site but can also allow light to fill the space even if it is closed. They sit on the grid that the crushing space is on but they each have skylights that impose the other grid into the space using light. The courtyard is right behind them, but they both open away from the courtyard and there is a large wire mesh wall acting as a buffer between the two spaces.

Courtyard

This is a courtyard/seating for the winery and cafe. It is entered from the barrel storage space or it can also be entered from the seating area near the entrance (which is to the right).

Barrel Storage

The barrel storage space is one of the more dynamic spaces. The ramp to the right is actually outside. There is a partially frosted glass wall enclosing the space to allow for conditioning. However, the opening for the ramp allows for light to diffuse into the space and for layers of movement and activity to happen between the barrel room and the ramp. Also, on the left you can see the continuation of the rough concrete out to the courtyard. The opening between the courtyard and the barrel storage is a sliding wall so that it has the ability to be closed for conditioning.

Entrance – Interior

Once the occupant enters the building they are faced with three main paths. The tasting room is to the left behind the wood screen. The path of rough concrete leads back into the production area and also to the courtyard outside of the barrel room. The wood ramp to the right leads to the roof courtyard/exterior.

Entrance – Exterior

This is the main entrance of the building. The site is entered from the path to the right from the parking lot or the ramp that connects the lower level to the rooftop leads directly into the entrance. It is a north facing, mostly glass, facade to allow for soft lighting and also allow it to be open to the surrounding site.

Continuing to Develop

Since the last post, some aspects of my design have changed or become stronger. Some elements have also been added or eliminated. I am still keeping with the general, simple form that is then manipulated. One thing that I have been focusing on developing is the parking and exterior site surrounding the building. Through a few iterations I have finally narrowed it down to a couple large moves playing off of the two grids that are overlayed.

Now I am starting to focus back in on certain elements of the design that have been put on the back burner such as the guest housing and the entrance lobby. However, by completing my previous task of getting the overall site mapped out should make this development of these spaces a bit smoother.

One thing that I am really trying to focus on is keeping this simple exterior form and the clarity of two grids influencing each other and coming together. Also, the complexity and diversity of the changes or moves being made within and around this form and how those changes begin to form and morph this simple form into something different while still holding its original “essence” and simplicity.

My goal is to have the revit model near completion and the design basically completed by Monday so that I am able to start my final renderings and drawings.

Stay tuned for images/renderings…

Design update…

After creating my site lines and setting the stage to start designing, I extruding forms and composing the spaces on the site.

I started with a simple sketch up model. I took the median of the main vineyard site lines and the site line “connecting” the site to the existing winery. The main programs would exist along the site line leading to the existing winery and the crushing/grape area would exist on the vineyard axis. This is because the grapes and crushing sets a precedent for the rest of the process.

From there I started to develop the form by taking advantage of certain site features and starting to inform the “process” space with the “grape crushing” space and allow them to being to influence each other. I elevated front corner of the building to open up the entrance but also to allow for better views from the roof.

From here, I began to develop the exterior and some larger moves that indicate a change or transition of space.

In this picture (above), there is a ramp that starts in the entrance space and continues up to the roof area almost stretching the entire length of the building. This allows entrances from both the upper and lower area to the tasting room/main entrance. There were also the starting points of some of the interior moves and the integration of the two grids that had been put into place. From here, I looked at developing how the building could also start to inform the exterior and creates spaces and how changes that happen on the interior could inform the exterior or vice versa.

This is where I have come so far. I have hand drawings that propose parking configurations, forklift accessibility, vegetation placement, etc. This sketch up model gets the idea across about how this building morphs and changes in accordance to certain grids and actions. However, I do need to edit the topo and some other things in rhino that will make this model more clear but this is the basic idea.
